The sea is everything.

It covers seven tenths of the terrestrial globe. Its breath is pure and healthy.  It is an immense desert, where man is never lonely, for he feels life stirring on all sides.  The sea is only the embodiment of a supernatural and wonderful existence.  It is nothing but love and emotion; it is the Living Infinite. – Jules Verne, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea

Who is  BICA?

Bay Islands Conservation Association (BICA), established in 1991, a Honduran non-profit, with locations in each of the Bay Islands: Utila, Roatan and Guanaja.  BICA has 29 years of experience implementing projects in the Bay Islands, specifically in environmental education & outreach, and more recently on research & monitoring.  It has been working in protected area management since 1994 as a co-manager.  Over the last seven years, BICA has promoted small educational campaigns on solid waste, its impacts on ecosystems, and human health in the bay islands.  Since 2013, the monthly monitoring marine water quality program was established to understand the effect of sewage on our reefs and to use as a tool to educate municipal leaders in the need for investment in sanitation in the communities around the Bay Islands National Marine Park. During the project the ordinances banning plastic bags, plastic straws, plastic bottles (PET) and foam in the municipality of Roatán were approved.  BICA began its citizen science program in 2018, consisting of a drift card study and brand audits in community beaches around the island of Roatan to collect data on waste.
