HELP US BUILD CRAWFISH ROCK
cOMMUNITY CENTER

The community of Crawfish Rock gets its name from the abundance of lobster that existed in the community in the past. The term crawfish is an old name that was used for lobsters here in the Bay Islands. On the north side of the island during the old days, there was an abundance of crawfish or lobsters. This community has a population of approximately 600 and survives on fishing, farming, catching crabs, hunting, construction and more. The people are native black English-speaking people, part of the general English-speaking culture of the Bay Islands. The community of Crawfish Rock is located in front of the multiple use zone of the Bay Islands National Marine Park. This marine protected area (MPA) has a mangrove forest directly in front of the community that is a protective barrier.

The community has many basic needs, like electricity, potable water, and is working to improve its sanitation infrastructure. Through BICA we are currently working with the community board and water board on the potable water and sanitation needs. However, the community has identified as the most pressing need to have a community center where the kids can have a safe place after school to receive tutoring, do homework, classes, recreation, and sports, and for the community to have a space to have meetings, community activities, as well, as a community clinic where they can receive basic medical care without having to leave their community. The Crawfish Rock community board seeks to improve living conditions and opportunities for the locals.

Crawfish Rock Community Center

To do this we need help raising funds to:

  • Purchase the land (1,097.32 sqm.) where the community center will be built $80,000.00 plus closing costs

  • Build the community center to use for community-wide meetings, a classroom for afterschool programs for the kids (tutoring, English classes, and more), a small community clinic, a kitchen, bathrooms, and offices (community board, water board, or other NGO that supports the programs). $160,000.00
