Pollution and contamination can have severe consequences for marine life, including detrimental effects on biodiversity, ecosystem balance, and human health. To address these issues, we have established a marine water quality monitoring program to assess the state of our marine environments and take necessary actions for their protection and conservation.
Why we do it?
Marine pollution poses a significant threat to the delicate balance of marine ecosystems. Various sources, such as industrial waste, sewage, and agricultural runoff, introduce pollutants into the marine environment. These pollutants can negatively impact water quality, leading to the degradation of habitats, harm to marine organisms, and potential risks to human health. By conducting marine water quality monitoring, we aim to identify pollution sources, evaluate the extent of contamination, and develop effective strategies for mitigating the impacts in conjunction with local authorities.
What are we doing?
Since 2013, we have been conducting monthly water quality monitoring surveys around the island of Roatan. Our monitoring efforts involve sampling water from various locations and analyzing it for key indicators of water quality, including physical, chemical, and biological parameters. We assess factors such as temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen levels, nutrient concentrations, pH, turbidity, and the presence of enterococcus bacteria.
Through these surveys, we gather valuable data on the overall health and condition of our marine ecosystems. This data helps us identify trends, detect potential issues, and make informed decisions regarding conservation and management strategies. Additionally, we collaborate with local authorities and communities to share our findings and promote awareness about the importance of water quality.
