Savings Club BICA Guanaja

What are we doing?

We set up savings clubs in artisanal fishing communities on the island of Guanaja. These clubs bring local people together to collectively save and provide small loans using those savings. Activities are conducted in nine-month or one-year cycles, after which accumulated savings and loan proceeds are distributed among members.

Savings Club BICA Guanaja

Why do we do it?

The primary purpose of savings clubs is to provide simple savings and loan services in communities that lack access to formal financial services. For small-scale fishers and their associates, who face difficulties in accessing loans, this initiative offers a reliable source of financing. In addition, by promoting savings and collaboration, savings clubs foster a sense of responsibility and ownership over the local environment. This can lead to a greater commitment to long-term conservation and the adoption of sustainable practices in the management of natural resources.
